Announcement WelcomeLetter Spring (information may change-tentative) DearPharmacyTechnician Students & Parents:
This is an email outlining important information to all students and parents registered for thePharmacyTechnician Program at TECC-East for the 2022-2023 school year. Welcomeand Happy Early New Year. I'm so excited for a new semester. Here is a head start to the class. Please read through this email carefully. Attached are the steps for state registration as well as frequently asked questions. I've also attached our informational brochure outlining the cost associated with this class. The student manual cost has been covered for students this semester to help off-set some of these costs. That's a savings of $75. It's an additional way TECC-East and LISD are working to help parents and students be successful & to offset some of the chaos and cost COVID-19 has caused.
Think Hard: Before we start. Read through this email carefully. Read through the fees and frequently asked questions. Understand the expectations being placed. This is medicine. Parents and students must understand that this is a working externship. This is serious business with professional companies in the community. Students are working with medicine and patients. This is life or death. Students are required to be able to meet all expectations of the class, including professionalism. In medicine, the expectation is 100% all the time or someone could get hurt. Attendance, professionalism, and grades will be used to access if you are capable of meeting this expectation. Students must be able to complete the tasks of the job safely and effectively. TECC-East, Administration, Mrs. Powers, and the pharmacy externship locations reserve the right to remove any student at any time. We will not put your student or the public at risk. Again, this is life or death.
TRANSPORTATION to and from internships is the responsibility of students for this program. Busses are provided to TECC-East from your respective home campus. FEES: As for fees, the registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy is required, fingerprinting registration/appointment, and physical drug testing fee made or completed by the first week. Print out your receipts for each step as proof of completion. Money for certification exams is required by week 8 of our course. Students that have not paid this fee or made arrangements with Mrs. Powers will be at risk of removal from the program at the 9-week grading period. Fees and costs for this course should never be a deciding factor for dropping a class. Although, some of the fees must be paid directly by students, we may be able to help assist with others. Just talk with Mrs. Powers if there is a financial need. Completion of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam is required for this course & certification. It will be your final exam. Students and parents will sign a letter agreeing to these terms. A social security number is required in order to apply for a trainee license. In addition, a driver's license or state ID is required for internship and testing. Students have 6-weeks to provide a copy of their permit, driver's license, state ID, or passport. If you have it, bring it first week and we'll make a copy. You won't have to worry about this. Note: It is required for testing and MUST be VALID (non-expired) Work on this as soon as possible. Time goes by quick.
Bring exact cash or check made directly to TECC-East LISD. Can be separate checks or one large check. A receipt will be provided if paid at school.
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: (see FAQ answered) That said, you may have some questions. Here's an answer to the big ones?
(1) Is the internship cancelled due to COVID-19? As of right now the externship has not been cancelled. Spring 2021 and 2022 were allowed to complete their internships. It was a great experience for all.
(2) If cancelled, does that mean I cannot be certified? No. Even if the externship is cancelled, students have the opportunity to receive two certifications. You can also start applying for jobs should your schedule allow for it. You will STILL BE certified if you work hard and pass the exams.
(3) Is the internship required, and is mask/vaccination required to participate in internships? The internship is required to participate in the course. It is and expectation and part of each students course completion and grade. For the Spring 2023 semester, CVS has notified me that vaccines will be required for students participating with their internship locations. As of May 2022, Walgreens has not posted a requirement for vaccination. These are professional business allowing us to step into a working internship opportunity. We will follow the rules and regulations they have in place. Our counselor can get with your student to find another course that meets their needs if this is not an option.
If you get free-time your last week of break, you may work ahead to memorize the attached abbreviations. We'll be working on these the first week. It's your head start should you choose.
We will proceed with registration as if we are going to complete the externship. This will additionally prepare students for the workforce, at any point, should they want to apply for jobs as a Pharmacy Technician in Training with the State of Texas. ThePharmacyTechnician Trainee License is required for the class and for ALL STUDENTS to enter theirpharmacyexternships the 2nd portion of our class. This is required by LAW. The registration is permission to practice as a technician with the state. It requires three steps: registration paperwork, fingerprinting, and a government background check the state performs. Students should complete this registration early. Students will be required to show proof that this application process has been initiated & completed. You can do this by simply printing a receipt for each step. This must be completed by the end of the first week. Please note, the fingerprinting appointment just needs to be made. You do not have to have it completed. Schedule the appointment and bring in a printed copy of your receipt. Special note, this needs to be completed within the first two weeks of class. Your trainee license will not come in without this step completed. They report this information to the Texas State Board ofPharmacy before they start your application. It's extremely important. If you do not have a trainee license, you do not work or go to your pharmacy externship. It's the LAW!
